During this course, we will discover the beauty of Sephardic songs which speak to us intimately and carry universal resonances. Arrival in Spain around the 6th century. Until its expulsion in 1492 at the time of the “Reconquista”, the Sephardic Jewish community left a deep imprint on Hispanic culture. The richness of the Judeo-Spanish musical heritage has been preserved by a very living oral tradition, transmitted mainly by women. Over time, this repertoire, mainly composed of love romances, wedding and exile songs, and lullabies, has spread widely throughout the Mediterranean basin. The vernacular language commonly used in these songs is a mixture of Spanish-Hebrew-Arabic-Turkish called “djudeszmo”. Exchanges between the three cultures, Jewish, Arab and Christian, flourished in Andalusia in the 12th and 13th centuries. during the peaceful period of “Conviviencia”. Thus the mutual influences and contributions have been fruitful, as evidenced by Arab-Andalusian music and poetry, a source of inspiration that is still current.
